A suspect was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of “Last Chance U” athletic director and retired football coach John Beam, the Oakland Police Department said. Beam, who was shot Thursday at the Laney College Fieldhouse, died Friday.

The suspect was identified as Cedric Irving Jr., a 27-year-old former high school football player. Irving Jr. and Beam knew each other, police said, but declined to elaborate.
